We’ve been building beautiful websites that people love using since 2014.

In that time, our team of website designers, developers and content writers have been continually refining our craft in building the best websites possible for Perth based businesses. Here’s a few reasons to consider Helium.

Purple Circle WordPress Website Example

There’s nothing like a good old-fashioned face-to-face meeting. We recognise the advantages of getting in the same room and on the same page, which is helpful when collaborating on complex projects, like a WordPress website.

And, because there’s a few cowboys in the industry, nothing says "trust" like putting a face to the name, eyeballing our office, and meeting the people who will be working on your site. Perth is a small place, and we’ll do our absolute best to meet your expectations (you know, in case we bump into each other at Woolworths one day).

It also means we’re not going to call you at 7:00am because we forgot you live in Perth. We pride ourselves on local customer service as we work with you to achieve a beautiful new website.

Listen, we’d prefer if you chose us to build your new website, but if you don’t, please make sure you go to a marketing company, not an IT company. Business in the IT and marketing industries can build websites, but a digital marketing agency like ours will treat this as an activity to grow your business — not just deliver you a technical masterpiece. We often find that IT-built websites are functional, but unnecessarily complex. And honestly, they don't look great...

We’re website developers and we’re website designers, so you get the best of both worlds! For example, your new website will be mobile and device friendly, and work across all standard screen sizes.

We also consider how to maximise your website’s conversion rate. In other words, we build websites that get you new customers! Every part of your new website is strategically designed to help turn visitors into paying clients.

Obviously, you also want to get people to your stunning new website. So, all of our websites come optimised for search engines (AKA, SEO). In a nutshell, we build our websites to give you a good foundation, but don’t expect to get the #1 of Google without putting in the hard yards — we can help you with ongoing SEO after the build if you like.

We’re a group of millennials who've been raised by Google. More than that, our team is made up of Website Designers, Website Copywriters , Website Developers, and dedicated Account Managers (who also loves websites). As digital natives, we've basically been on the internet since day one. We've seen how it's evolved and advanced, and have grown and adapted with it. We can predict new website trends, and have the resources and skills to build incredible, contemporary websites that turn heads.

We believe the quality of our work speaks for itself. The proof is in the pudding, and we have made a lot of pudding for a lot of different Perth businesses and organisations. Our deep cross-industry knowledge serves us (and our clients) well, and every day, we're building increasingly complex websites that help clients smash their marketing goals.

Why WordPress?

  • Advanced websites are best built in WordPress.

You may be surprised to know that we have a polygamous relationship with WordPress. Sure we love it, but we also love other Content Management Systems (CMS), too.

So, why are we trying to convince you that WordPress is the best choice for you? We're not really trying to "convince" you — there’s heaps of other software you can build a website with. But in broad strokes, WordPress is really well suited to building advanced websites with complex functionality, like membership sites, large eCommerce, virtual tours, and the list goes on. Simply put, WordPress might be the most suitable and flexible option.

If you want a small and simple website, then WordPress (and our advanced package) might not be for you. To save you asking, blogs, adding photos, maps, videos, text, etc are all considered basic functionality. We have other WordPress packages, which we'll run through later.

Basically, the rule of thumb is build with WordPress if there is a good reason too. If not, go with something simpler. If you're not sure, we can discuss the most suitable option with you.

  • WordPress is the most popular website platform on the market.

If website platforms was a popularity contest, WordPress would be at the top of the podium. 37% of all websites on the internet are built in WordPress (up from 25% in 2016), which is 16 times more than the second most popular choice! It seems WordPress is here to stay despite more alternatives than ever.

  • Well-supported by website developers.

For pretty much the same reason as the popularity status above, you’ll also enjoy plenty of options for support. More likely than not, if you have an IT person on staff they will be in favour of WordPress — but we can help you out, too!

Here's a technical breakdown of what's included under each option.

Here's a technical breakdown of our website hosting packages.

Even though pretty much every one of our clients will host with us long term, there is no obligation to do so.

You only have to host with Helium for the duration of your website build, at which point you can transfer the website to another provider should you be so inclined. Just keep in mind you’ll want to make sure the other provider is doing that regular maintenance, not just hosting the website (the easy part).

What’s not included?

The only thing we typically don’t include in an Advanced Website Package is data migration.

Data migration is the process of transferring information from your old website (or system) to the new one. This mostly applies to eCommerce websites and other websites with a database attached to them, such as membership portals. For example, we do not copy over old blog articles, product information, historic eCommerce orders, membership details, analytics, or anything that requires a manual or automatic import of records.

Third Party Costs

For the sake of transparency, there might be a few inconsequential costs that we ask for you to pay for directly via credit card. These include specialist plugins (usually requested by the client), payment processing costs if you’re taking money online (through providers like Stripe), but that’s about it.

What are the limitations of WordPress?

We love WordPress, but we don't have rose-coloured glasses for it.

WordPress isn't perfect. In fact, many  developers have a love-hate relationship with it. Earlier on this page, we talked about how there are  alternatives to WordPress — the good ones gained a market by exploiting the WordPress limitations on the left.

  • High maintenance

WordPress is a high maintenance platform. It takes time and effort to keep it updated and working as it should. This includes plugin updates, theme updates, PHP updates, security updates, WordPress version updates, and more. If we host your website after we build it, these updates won't be an issue for you since we’ll maintain them on your behald. Otherwise, it's a big job!

  • Functionality limited to available plugins

This is actually a WordPress pro and a con. One of the benefits of WordPress is that it’s functionality can be easily expanded upon by adding plugins (some free, some not). The downside is, if there isn’t a plugin, it’s basically not possible. We can create custom plugins, but that puts you into a whole other price tier. Realistically, WordPress has heaps of functionality, but sometimes we run into limitations with what it can do. So unfortunately, we just have to accept it’s the best platform on the market for functionality and it is what it is.

  • Periodical issues & bug fixes

One of the main downsides to a WordPress website is it's very likely for issues to occur over time. These issues occur more often in WordPress than other systems. This is because WordPress is an open-source platform, made up of over 346,000 lines of code from thousands of different developers, and new versions are constantly being released. But don’t worry, these updates and fixes are covered under your hosting arrangement with us.

WordPress terminology.

WordPress.com Website Builder
  • Content Management System

A Content Management System (CMS) is the software used to build your website, so that you can edit it yourself without a developer. Back in the day you would have to pay a developer by the hour to make any changes to basic content like updating text and images, but now CMSs allow clients to have more control than ever.

  • Open Source

WordPress is available to the general public to be modified and changed, instead of being privately owned by a corporation. This factor is probably the most significant driver behind both WordPress’s strengths (flexibility, open functionality) and weaknesses (lacks technical cohesion due to contributions from thousands of developers).

  • PHP

PHP is the programming language that every WordPress website is built with. Like with all programming languages, these are updated and improved over time. Practically this won’t make much difference to your website but it’s important to continually update your website’s PHP version to one that is still supported, for security and performance reasons. As your WordPress website host, we will update your PHP version on your behalf.

To use a construction metaphor, PHP is the concrete used in the building process.

  • WordPress Themes

A WordPress theme is the foundation of a WordPress website, and provides us (the website development company) a set of initial defaults settings from which to customise your new website from. Your theme will have new versions released over time, which is maintained and updated by us, your WordPress host.

To continue our metaphor, if PHP is concrete then your theme is your house slab — the foundation of your house that is shaped by poured concrete.

  • WordPress Plugins

After the theme is established, your website’s functionality is enhanced through the addition of “plugins”. These are bite-sized pieces of code made by developers from all around the world that enable specific functions.

A few of our favourites include:

    • The Stripe plugin, which enables a website to take payments online via the Stripe payment processor.
    • WooCommerce, this enables a website to have products listed (amongst other things).
    • Gravity Forms, which allows your business to build complex forms, such as enrolment forms with conditional logic.

FAQs.

  • What is WordPress?

WordPress is the software used to build your website and allows you to edit it. See the above terminology section where we discuss Content Management Systems.

  • How do I tell if my website is built in WordPress?

If you aren’t sure what your current website is built in, you can use a free tool like WhatCMS to identify the software of your (or any) website.

  • How do you build a WordPress website?

Your existing website stays live while we work on your new site (unless you really want to take it down).

Technically speaking, we purchase a development server on your behalf, install WordPress onto the server, choose the right theme/foundation and then enable the scoped functionality by combining plugins.

Creatively speaking, we ask you fill out a briefing form to bring us up to speed on your business and expectations for the project. We then have a team meeting with the Designer and Content Writer, to discuss the briefing for the project and the goals you're hoping to achieve with your website.

From there, we’ll develop a home page concept to define a creative direction for the project. Once refined and defined, we build a page (or section of pages) incrementally and ask for your feedback continuously until the site is complete.

Once approved, we replace your current website with the new one, with minimal disruption. This website launch timeframe can take up to 48 hours, but your website will stay online for the most of that time.

  • Will I be able to edit my Advanced Website myself?

Absolutely! Everyone of our WordPress websites is completely self-editable and we provide training and resources to support you in this.

  • Can I host my website myself?

Absolutely! We’re not territorial about website hosting and really only provide it as a convenience to our clients. If you plan to host the website yourself, please ensure you have a comprehensive hosting plan in place, including back-ups, security measures, and technical maintenance. Without being overly dramatic, you wouldn’t be the first self-hosting client to completely lose a website by accident...

  • Do I need to think about website speed?

Website speed is important. Very important. Consider your website will be used on not just desktop websites with high speed internet connections, but also on throttled mobile devices. Think about the volume and type of content you are using, and try to strike a balance between giving the user a great experience and how long it will take them to have it.

  • Can you improve my existing website, or rebuild it from scratch?

We can improve an existing WordPress site, but we really don't like doing it. As they say, you can’t teach an old dog new tricks — this is also true of websites. While we can improve your current WordPress website, it will likely be limited by the work done by the previous developer. Websites given a "facelift" are never as beautiful or functional as a new website built from scratch.

To recap, yes we can do it, but we really don't recommend it. It can even end up being more expensive than simpy building a totally new site.
